Dear fellow Middle Temple Students,

On the evening of Monday 26th September I was elected to be your President and oversee the smooth running of the Middle Temple Students' Association for the academic year of 2011/2012.

The primary aim of the newly elected committee is to build on the successes of previous years and to add some new events to our already burgeoning arsenal. We held our first committee meeting last Thursday 6th October and have all agreed to focus on the following:

1. Pupillage workshops in early 2012.

2. A careers fair/seminar/networking event to address 'the vacant period' that so many of us will be required to fill between finishing the bar course and commencing/pursuing pupillage.

3. Social events: We intend to hold a winter ball in November (day tbc) and a summer ball at a date to be confirmed.

4. Mooting: We organise participation in: i) The Phillip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition: http://www.ilsa.org/jessuphome ii) The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot: http://cisgw3.law.pace.edu/vis.html - If you would like to take part in any of these competitions you will need to contact Donna McDougall by emailing her at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by Friday 14th October. iii) The Rosamund Smith Mooting Competition is run by the Treasury Office, the MTSA does not organise this competition although we do assist in some minor administrative functions. Any queries regarding this should be addressed to the Treasury Office.

5. Debating: This wing of the association has waned in recent years. This year we would like to develop this often neglected aspect of the Middle Temple Students' Association as debating is an excellent opportunity to hone your advocacy skills in a more relaxed environment than that of advocacy classes or mooting. In order to do this we have agreed to finance as many entries as we can into several debating competitions this year.

i) The Imperial College Open Debating Competition: 29th October 2011 (http://www.union.ic.ac.uk/scc/debating/open.html) - Teams enter in groups of two, if you are interested (we're paying the entry cost for as many MTSA teams as possible) then contact the debating officer, Kenneth Cochran at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to register interest or sign up for the competition. -Out of London- note that on the Imperial College link it says that there may be a place to crash for the night included in the entry fee. Contact Kenneth regarding this.

Best wishes,

Will Glover

MTSA President
